API Spec 5CT is an international standard for casing and tubing in the oil and gas industry, stipulating the chemical composition, mechanical properties and manufacturing requirements of steel pipes. The following steel grades are classified and introduced according to strength, corrosion resistance and applicable environments:
1. J55 / K55
1. J55 / K55
Features:
Low-strength steel grade, with a minimum yield strength of 55,000 psi (379 MPa).
The mechanical properties of J55 and K55 are the same, but K55 has stricter control over sulfur content.
Economical and practical, with excellent welding and processing performance.
Application scenarios:
Surface casing for shallow or medium-deep wells.
Low-pressure oil and gas wells, water injection wells.
Advantages: Low cost, suitable for non-corrosive environments.
Low-strength steel grade, with a minimum yield strength of 55,000 psi (379 MPa).
The mechanical properties of J55 and K55 are the same, but K55 has stricter control over sulfur content.

2. N80
Features:

It is divided into N80 Type 1 (ordinary grade) and N80Q (quenched and tempered, with better performance).

Intermediate and deep well casing or tubing.
Intermediate casing for horizontal shale gas wells.
Advantages: High cost performance, balancing strength and processability.
Medium strength, minimum yield strength 80,000 psi (552 MPa).
It is divided into N80 Type 1 (ordinary grade) and N80Q (quenched and tempered, with better performance).
Application scenarios:
Intermediate and deep well casing or tubing.

3. L80
Features:
The yield strength is the same as that of N80 (80,000 psi), but the corrosion resistance is enhanced through heat treatment.
It meets the requirements for resistance to hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) stress corrosion cracking and is suitable for acidic environments.
Application scenarios:
Oil and gas wells containing hydrogen sulfide (such as sour gas fields).
Corrosion-resistant casing for high-temperature and high-pressure wells.
Advantages: Strong corrosion resistance, meeting ISO 15156 standards.
The yield strength is the same as that of N80 (80,000 psi), but the corrosion resistance is enhanced through heat treatment.
It meets the requirements for resistance to hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) stress corrosion cracking and is suitable for acidic environments.
Application scenarios:
Oil and gas wells containing hydrogen sulfide (such as sour gas fields).
Corrosion-resistant casing for high-temperature and high-pressure wells.
Advantages: Strong corrosion resistance, meeting ISO 15156 standards.
4. C90 / R95 / T95
Features:
High compressive strength (C90: 90,000 psi; R95/T95: 95,000 psi).
Both C90 and T95 have resistance to sulfide stress corrosion (SSC), while R95 should be avoided in acidic environments.
T95 has undergone special heat treatment, resulting in lower hardness and superior crack resistance.
Application scenarios:
High-collapse resistance casing for deep and ultra-deep wells.
A harsh environment containing H₂S/CO₂ (C90/T95).
Advantages: Strong resistance to collapse, adaptable to complex geological conditions.
High compressive strength (C90: 90,000 psi; R95/T95: 95,000 psi).

Advantages: It has an extremely strong load-bearing capacity and is suitable for high-pressure environments.
